Success in any business is directly dependent on the ability of producers to inform buyers about their product. Most of the meat industry in the United States as been established for a sufficient amount of time to inform every consumer in America about their product. Beef, Pork, and Chicken producers, packers and retailers have all done a good job of marketing their products. Since much of their product base is generic, only routine updates are needed to keep the consumer thinking about purchasing their product. Value added products are the subject of most advertising as producers make attempt to get consumers to switch their purchasing habits from generic to the value added products. Goat meat production does not fit the above model as it is still an industry in the growth mode. Only a small percentage of the population is aware of goat meat ad an even smaller percentage have eaten goat meat. This leaves us with a challenge as producers to educate and inform not only our consumers, but more important the public (our potential consumers) about the merits of goat meat and why they should include it as part of their diets. The Mountain States Meat Goat Association was formed as a multipurpose organization to serve goat producers in several ways. One of those ways is to assist commercial producers to be successful in their efforts to raise and market meat goats. We have made significant efforts to assist commercial producers by providing seminars, educational materials and marketing assistance. One of the most important ways we have helped commercial producers is to promote the showing of market, commercial, registered percentage, and Full blood goats. The show ring has gained the attention of consumers as they see the goats at the various shows. This attention is extremely valuable in promotion of goat meat. The market goat program that we have started is particularly valuable to commercial producers as the market wethers represent the type of animal the commercial producer is producing for the meat markets. This type of promotion is an incredible marketing tool and should be supported in every way possible. I encourage every commercial producer of meat goats to join MSMGA. We need your support. We need your financial assistance and your expertise to increase our efforts to market meat goats. I recently received an email form one of our sister organizations in the southeast. They have a very active youth program and offer a stock trailer as an award to the highpoint youth in the market goat show program. The trailer has advertising on it from those who sponsored it. What a great advertising idea for both your farm as well as for meat goats in general! I would like to see a trailer offered from MSMGA each year for our high point youth as well. In order for this to happen, we need each of you commercial producers to join our team and together we can make a difference for all aspects of our exciting industry. |
